HAPPY AGAIN
In the middle of the night
with my wife who had wet
her side of the bed when
I brought her a bowl of pears.
I felt alone in the darkness
when she snuggled up close
to me to keep warm and dry.
My body must have informed
my brain that I was so happy
that I couldn’t stop smiling
for the rest of a long night,
just like the time I kicked
my heels in the air on the day
of my discharge from the army.
